The long and traditional pilgrimage history in Altötting goes back more than 500 years, which started in 1489, prompted by two miracles of healing. The numerous votive tablets at the Chapel of Mercy tell of the many pilgrims and their stories. Inside, the Holy Chapel harbors the world-famous miraculous image "Our Lady", which is also known as the "Black Madonna" and is believed to have been created around 1330 in Burgundy or on the Upper Rhine. The Chapel of Mercy is the destination of more than a million pilgrims and visitors who flock here every year from home and abroad.
