The Chapel of Grace is also called the Holy Chapel. It houses the so-called “Black Madonna” of Altötting. The building is one of the “Shrines of Europe”. The chapel is the destination of many pilgrimages and establishes Altötting's fame as a place of pilgrimage.
The origin of this chapel remains hidden in darkness even after 500 years of intensive research. The octagonal shape suggests that the chapel was originally built as a baptistery.
When you enter the chapel, you immediately see why the pilgrimage is called "to the Black Mother of God": not only the miraculous image, but also the entire interior of the building is dominated by a black color scheme.
The chapel's surroundings are decorated with countless miraculous and votive images. There are also many crosses here with the inscription “Maria hilf” or “Maria helped”.
A visit to this special chapel is worth every detour, even if you are not Catholic. The importance of this place for many believers is immediately noticeable.
