Hemmen is a district of Schlitz in Vogelsbergkreis in central Hesse, with about 150 inhabitants.
The oldest surviving written mention of the village dates from 1379.
Hemmen belonged to the reign of Schlitz. Here the Schlitzer regulations from the 18th century, together with parts of the law of Fuldish, were considered to be particular law. The common law only applied insofar as these special regulations for a situation did not contain any provisions. This special right continued to apply even during its membership in the Grand Duchy of Hesse in the 19th century. However, the ordinances were rarely applied in judicial practice. On January 1, 1900, particular law was replaced by the Civil Code, which was uniform throughout the German Reich.
On the nearby Kötzenberg there are remains of a medieval castle. On this mountain there is also the Stone Cross, a border marking from 1383.
