The first church in Birštonas probably stood as early as 1529, but fell into disrepair because the governors of the residence were not zealous Catholics. When Birštonas passed to the devout nobles of Hungarian origin Kaspars Horvat and his wife Catherine Užali, in 1609. King Zigmantas Vaza signed a foundation for the construction of a new church.

The church also contains a Black Madonna. Particularly striking is the image of a bishop who died in a concentration camp.
