The magnificent, spacious facility of the "Treue Zuversicht" mercury mine.Mercury is extracted from the soft mineral mercury sulfide (cinnabar, vermillion) by roasting. In addition to the visitor mine (tours by appointment between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.), there is a beer garden (tenant wanted!), and concerts are held several times a year. The restroom facilities were renovated in 2019.Update: At the end of the 2023 season, the previous operator ended his operations after 13 years. The facility will be continued by the Rüdesheim Municipal Association and the Mining Association starting in April 2024. The inn was unsuccessfully run as "Tomm's Hütte" by caterer Thomas Maier from Sponheim, so a new tenant is being sought for 2025.
Tours are offered during the season until the end of October/beginning of November and can be booked by phone or online.vg-ruedesheim.de/tourismus-freizeit/sehenswertes/#/pois/RPT/4247809b-8a97-4dfb-8d60-93996edde6ab/besucherbergwerk-schmittenstollenCinnabar mining began here in the 15th century and continued, with interruptions, until the 18th century. After 1800, there were several attempts to turn the mine into a profitable business again, but these failed. In winter, the 25-kilometer-long tunnels on 5 main levels are inhabited by 15,000 bats (7 species).
