The church was founded by Frisian immigrants around 1200. In the same place there was a holy source in pre-Christian times. The free-standing bell tower, a stack of bells, is the oldest wooden tower in Schleswig-Holstein. The wood used for the construction was demonstrably felled in 1461.

Frisians from the mouth of the Rhine settled in the "Utlande" after the first turn of the millennium and finally also founded a small church on the eastern edge of the island "Eiderstedt" around 1200: They brought the Rhenish tuff stone with them for the building, as well as their patron saint, St. Leonhard, the the church was consecrated.
However, the baptismal font comes from southern Swedish sandstone, because the Archdiocese of Lund in Sweden was responsible for the church. After all, Koldenbüttel was on the old Viking trade route, which reached the North Sea from Haithabu via the Treene and Eider.
A Romanesque cornice frieze is still clearly visible around the chancel, while the nave in the west was expanded in the Gothic period around 1400 to its current size. Soon after, the "bell stack" was added, the innermost supporting beam of which is dated 1461.
