Saarlouis was built by architects Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban and Thomas de Choisy from 1680 to 1690 to protect the new eastern border and the stones were broken in this area. There is also a Vauban hiking trail.

The quarries are really worth seeing. Vauban was a great builder in his day. He also has the fortress in Landau i.d. Palatinate planned and built!
