Tips

The impressive ruins of Shap Abbey are situated in the secluded valley of the River Lowther. Founded in the late 12th century, Shap Abbey was one of 32 religious houses in Britain belonging to the Premonstratensian order of canons. Today, the tower and other remains are open to explore. The ruins, which are managed by English Heritage, are free to enter during daylight hours and there are information boards on the site.
