There has been a pilgrimage to this place since around the year 1000. Before that, there was a church on this site dedicated to St. Gunthildis. The building dates from the 11th century and was consecrated by Bishop Gundekar (1057–1075).[2] Today's pilgrimage church of the Holy Cross is a new Baroque building, built in 1755/56 and furnished by 1770. Belonging to the Bishopric of Eichstätt, its builders and artists shaped the church, which stands on the left edge of the valley. The design and construction management was the responsibility of the court and cathedral chapter architect Giovanni Domenico Barbieri. The frescoes, which were partially painted over in 1901 and uncovered again in 1954, were painted by Johann Michael Baader, and the stucco (including the stucco pulpit) was by Johann Kaspar Aicher. The picture program is dedicated to the cross of Christ; the main painting in the nave shows its discovery in 320 by the Empress Helena. The baroque high altar, flanked by two angels, contains an altarpiece by Willibald Wunderer, which depicts the veneration of the cross by the four continents. The paintings on the side altars are by Baader.

This beautiful pilgrimage site is always worth a visit. A bourgeois inn is not far away and it is not far to a beautiful viewpoint via the Glockersteig
