Easy gravel cycle up to the dam up hill most of the way but on mainly tarred road. Past the dam you come onto the single moor track and 4x4 stuff.

Although it looks like a natural loch, Loch Glascarnoch is largely a huge reservoir created in the 1950s. The dam was completed in 1957, is around 510 metres long and was part of the great hydroelectric project that brought electricity to remote communities in the Highlands. The curious thing is that the water doesn't fall directly to a power station located here: it travels about 8 km through a tunnel dug into the mountain to the Mossford power station.

The most interesting thing is under the surface. When they built the reservoir, sections of the old road between Ullapool and Dingwall, small bridges, and old crofts were submerged. In exceptionally dry years, when the water level drops significantly, the old road, bridges, and ruins reappear, like the remains of a small landscape lost under the lake. In 2015 and again in 2020, the drop in water levels allowed part of that disappeared world to be seen again.
