Mountain Biking Highlight
Under the drawbridge the sign "Sängerwiese" points on a serpentine path, which leads steeply downhill, until at the first branch the marking "blue X" of the long-distance trail Eisenach-Budapest takes the route and leads through oak and beech forests to the Waldgasthof Sängerwiese. It takes its name after the Thuringian Song Festival of 1847 - In August, 28 male choirs with over 1200 singers met here for a unique singing contest in the woods.
From the »Sängerwiese« the markings »green square« and »red X« lead in the forest towards »wild sow«. On the way there are numerous viewpoints with a view back to the Wartburg and Eisenach. Finally load hut, table and benches at the cross stone wild sow for rest. The cross stone bears the year 1483 (year of birth of Luther) and is the oldest stone with a date on the Rennsteig. The atonement shows in bas-relief a hunter riding a wild boar and a hunting mate with a scoop.

Always nice for a short stopover on the way to the Rennsteig. Especially nice in late summer when around 6 pm the sun shines again on the square in front of the restaurant. Actually, the restaurant closes at 5 pm during the week. But since most of the staff is there, there is often a cool drink later.
