Singer meadow
Under the drawbridge, the sign “Sängerwiese” points to a serpentine path that leads steeply downwards until the “blue X” marking of the Eisenach – Budapest long-distance hiking trail takes over the route at the first junction and leads through oak and beech forests to the Waldgasthof Sängerwiese. It bears its name after the Thuringian Singing Festival in 1847 - in August 28 male choirs with over 1200 singers met here for a unique singing competition in the forest.
From the »Singer meadow« the markings »green square« and »red X« lead in the forest towards »Wilde Sau«. On the way there are numerous vantage points with a view back to the Wartburg and Eisenach. Finally, the hut, table and benches at Kreuzstein Wilde Sau invite you to rest. The Kreuzstein bears the year 1483 (Luther's year of birth) and is the oldest stone on the Rennsteig with a year. The atonement cross shows in bas-relief a hunter riding a wild boar and a hunting assistant with a boar pen.
