According to tradition, Grote Pier (Grutte Pier) lived in this village, its most famous and infamous inhabitant, who was born around 1480 and has left his mark at home and abroad.He was the freedom fighter of Friesland. He mainly took issue with the authority of the Saxons, the emperor and the Dutch "from across the Zuiderzee". A statue has been erected for him in Kimswerd. His legendary cousin Wijerd Jelckama and his family also lived in Kimswerd and the surrounding area.
