Tips

  • "Precise information about the period in which Laurenburg was built cannot be given based on the sources known today. It was already standing in 1093 AD, because that was the year in which it was first mentioned in documents. The foundation charter of the Maria Laach Abbey in the Eifel states fifth on the list of witnesses.Dudo Comes de Lurenburch is considered to be the builder of the castle. His sons Ruppert I and Arnold I began building Nassau Castle in 1124, but it was not until 1159 that the Archbishop of Trier, Hillin, gave the castle to his descendants as a fief. They thus became the rightful owners and from then on called themselves "Counts of Nassau".Castlemen remained at Laurenburg for many years, continuing to call themselves "von Laurenburg". The Loeners, the Buchers and numerous others are known. When and how Laurenburg was destroyed is largely unknown. In 1643 the Imperial Count Peter Melander von Holzappel acquired the Esterau and the dilapidated Laurenburg.
The descendants of the ruling houses related to the county: the princes of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg (builders of the Laurenburg Castle and lords of the silver mines) from 1700-1841, the Austrian Archduke Stephan until 1867, the princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont until 1985 did not contribute to the preservation of the castle and the keep, which was already threatened with collapse.
In the spring of 1985, the current lord of the castle, Horst Wienberg, purchased the castle ruins and the area of the castle hill. He has made it his task to secure the castle complex and to make it visible in its former dimensions. The keep has been largely expanded, is inhabited and is open to the public."
