However, many centuries passed before the first German seaside resort was founded in Heiligendamm. It was not until 1793 that it was founded by the Duke of Mecklenburg, Friedrich Franz I. He had his summer residence in nearby Bad Doberan. His personal physician, Dr. Samuel Gottlieb Vogel, had recognized the healing effect of the sea water on a variety of illnesses. On his advice, the Duke bathed in the Baltic Sea water at Heiligendamm. The special location of Heiligendamm was quickly recognized. Without ebb and flow, with ideal climatic conditions thanks to the beech forests with dry and clean air.
