According to the Arabic version of legend, which appeared in Aleppo at the end of the fourth century and in Constantinople at the beginning of the fifth century, Kosmas and Damian were children of a Christian mother named Theodota, whose other three sons, like the twins, also died as martyrs. Kosmas and Damian are said to have worked as doctors in Aigeai in Cilicia (in the south of modern-day Turkey), in particular in the "Son of God Hospital" of Pheremma.
