Best Hikes to Hanekenfähr Lock (Ems-Vechte Canal)

Tips

  • These lock gates are still intact, especially when the water level in the canal is high, the lock gate is closed. The lock is 40 meters long.

  • The Hanekenfahr lock is not a normal lock. Rather, the lock consists of two gates that are normally open and can therefore be passed unhindered by shipping. Only when the Ems is high are the two gates closed and then opened alternately for ships so that they function like a lock. On the one hand, this ensures that the city of Lingen is protected against flooding and, on the other hand, the continued operation of shipping is possible at the same time.
