On July 19, 1825, an eerie experience took place for the last time in Lingen: the last hour of a murderer had struck, the death sentence had just been read out on the court in front of the town hall.

Just under Gerd's grave
"Gerhard Kruis" alias "Knapp Gerd" from Suttrup "killed his comrade Gerhard Heinrich Langeborg from Andervenne on his way back from the Netherlands on September 13, 1824. The findings on site and the statements of the perpetrator showed: Kruis had with Langeborg immediately before the crime Sitting on the edge of the road leading from Baccum and Ramsel at the edge of the grave and smoking a pipe, Kruis saw a club almost as thick as an arm and almost 70 cm long, picked it up and hit Langeborg in the back of the right temple.
Gerhard Kruis was sentenced to death by beheading after lengthy criminal proceedings. The last execution in the Lingen area took place on him in 1825, in view of a large crowd. It was carried out at the place of execution on the Gierenberg in Laxtener Feld. According to witness statements, the grave was located right next to the execution site. Whether the place in the forest between Laxten and Ramsel marked today as "Knapp Gerds Grab" is the exact place of execution remains unproven.
