Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (February 16, 1834 in Potsdam; August 9, 1919 in Jena) was a German physician, zoologist, philosopher, draftsman, and freethinker, as well as a university professor in Jena. From the 1860s onward, he developed the ideas of Charles Darwin into a specialized theory of evolution. Through his popular writings and lectures, he contributed greatly to the spread of Darwinism in Germany. Unlike his teacher Rudolf Virchow and his opponent Emil Heinrich Du Bois-Reymond, he wanted to see it incorporated into school curricula. Furthermore, he developed a detailed embryological argument for the theory of evolution and, in this context, formulated the fundamental biogenetic law.
