Blankenstein is known as the start and end point of the 168.3 km (historical length) Rennsteig as one of the best known and most important long-distance hiking trails in Europe. Monuments such as “Wassererle” at the Selbitzbrücke, “Julius-Plänckner-Gedenkstein”, the “Steinerne Rennsteigwanderer” at the train station, the “Rennsteigbrunnen” at the Köchers Hölzchen and the “Drei Eichen” at the end announce this. With the opening of the inner German border in 1989, the place regained its importance in the field of tourism.
