Sanctuary of Madonna del Monte

At 627 meters above sea level, under the slopes of Monte Giove is the wonderful Sanctuary of Madonna del Monte. The building most likely dates back to the twelfth century. Napoleon also passed through here, as reported by the inscription on the facade.

S. Paolo della Croce stayed here in 1735, Napoleon used the hermitage for a few days during the summer of 1814 to escape Portoferraio's heat and to meet his Polish lover Maria Walewska, hidden from prying eyes.

The feast of the Madonna del Monte is celebrated on August 15th, on this day the islanders go to the sanctuary to pay homage to the Virgin.
