The Rheinschanzinsel is surrounded by the Rhine and Philippsburger Altrhein. The area is protected from flooding by the XXXIII flood dam. The island is used intensively for agriculture. The polder is used in extreme flood events that occur every 25 years on average. In addition, depending on the Rhine water levels, "partial flooding for meadow restoration" is planned.
