A great highlight, the Altonaer Volksparks, which was built between 1914 and 1927 on a forest site in Bahrenfeld. Built by Ferdinand Tutenberg, who came from Braunschweig, where he was born in 1874 and died in 1956.
The Volkspark idea came up at the end of the 19th century. In the cities that are overpopulated by rural exodus and industrialization, many people live in a confined space under catastrophic hygienic and social conditions. "Air, sun and movement" is the motto of gardeners and urban planners, who, influenced by the lifestyle reform of the turn of the century, want to integrate places of relaxation and nature experience into the big city. Their goal is a public park for all layers of the population, which can be used at any time of the year.

The 205-hectare Altonaer Volkspark is Hamburg's largest public park, the core area of which has been a listed building since September 2002.
