Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is an essential village in the Basque Country. Nestled at the confluence of the Nives, the medieval city is at the crossroads of the roads serving the Basque Country.

The city has a relatively rich historical and architectural heritage. There is notably a medieval enclosure made up of an imposing wall pierced by four large gates. In its heart you will find several artisans who offer many local products.

The medieval city also owes its fame to the Camino de Santiago which crosses it. An emblematic stop on this trail, the village welcomes many of its pilgrims throughout the year.

At the foot of the Basque mountains, in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, life is good, take the time to stroll through its alleys, to eat on its various terraces or to relax in the numerous gîtes which are found there.

When the pilgrim on the Way of St. James - coming from Germany - reaches the Pyrenees town of 'Saint Jean Pied de Port', he has crossed all of France. Now the next stage is uphill over the Pyrenees and with the Roland fountain and later in the afternoon the large monastery of Roncesvalles (Orreaga) Spain is reached. From there it is a little less than 800 kilometers on the “Camino Frances” to the destination, the tomb of the Apostle James (the Elder) in the Galician 'Santiago de Compostela'.
