From 1625 onwards, the local castle was expanded into a citadel. Under the direction of the French fortress architect Vauban, the city's defenses were also fundamentally rebuilt by 1728.

Even before the bridge, but outside the walls, a footpath, the Chemin de ronde, leads up to the citadel.

The citadel is protected by four bastions in all directions; further walls extend towards the city, from which the streets and city gates could be bombarded with cannon fire.
