The tower, built in the 16th century as a refuge for the Feste Stein, later lost its importance and was converted into a prison. One of the most prominent inmates was the gypsy Christina Klein, née Walther, known as the black Christine. She was the wife of the notorious robber captain Johann Friedrich Schwan.

You are here in the old town center of Stein with the market square east of the castle. The site with the tower is privately owned.
There are nice places to sit under the trees next to the tower and on the square in front of the former castle.
