The traditional Sunday fish market takes place from 5:00 to 9:30 a.m. (from 7:00 a.m. between November 15th and March 15th) with open-air stalls at the eastern end of Große Elbstraße in Altona. The market serves an economic and social function for local customers and vendors. The sometimes boisterous behavior of the vendors also makes the public fish market a tourist attraction. On summer Sundays, around 70,000 visitors come, while on winter Sundays, the number is between 5,000 and 10,000.
