The oldest village church in the Vierlande and Marschlande districts in the east of Hamburg is located in Altengamme. This remarkable baroque church houses the old bell from the former Hamburg Cathedral.

The fieldstone church dates back to the earliest settlement of the Vierlande district. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of children, fishermen, sailors, and traders. It was first mentioned in a document in 1247.

Since the Reformation, in Altengamme around 1535, the Evangelical Lutheran congregation has lovingly maintained and expanded its church.

When the church collapsed during a storm in 1747, the congregation rebuilt it. Since then, St. Nicholas' Church has developed into a gem of the rural Baroque style.
