The fortified castle of Bouillon, the oldest in Belgium from the feudal period!Visit one of Belgium's fortified castles and embark on a journey through more than 1000 years of history! The fortified castle of Bouillon, perched on three rocky peaks and overlooking the Semois and the state, with its maze of corridors and immense vaulted rooms, is considered the first and most interesting vestige of feudalism in Belgium. The origins of the first fortifications go back to the 8th century.Immortalized by Godefroid, leader of the First Crusade (1096), he confessed to the Holy Sepulchre, who linked the castle to the Archdiocese of Liège to finance his expedition to the Holy Land. Finally, under the wars of Louis XIV, it will undergo a major development work by Vauban and will be militarily occupied until 1830.

The Burg Bouillon is a hilltop castle above the Belgian town of Bouillon in a narrow loop of the river Semois. The complex was built in the 11th century and converted into a fortress in the 17th century.
The period of origin of the castle is unclear. Their strategic importance lay in the control of the north-south route from Reims via Liege to Aachen between Upper and Lower Lorraine. To a veritable castle was the plant under Gottfried III. expanded between 1050 and 1067. It was the center of the rule of the house Ardenne.
