This protected area is characterized by different habitats that were created by former manual quarries with shallow limestone crests and deeper terrain depressions. Particularly impressive in the mysterious coppice is the stock of various gentian and orchid species as well as columbines and meadow knapweeds.
Incidentally, the material from the former limestone quarries was used to build the monastery and the monastery church in Lamspringe.
