The Gartetalbahn was the only narrow-gauge railway (750 mm) that touched the Eichsfeld. Originally it was a rail connection between Göttingen and Rittmarshausen. The line was opened on December 7th, 1897. The extension to Duderstadt was opened on July 1, 1907. This established a continuous rail connection from Göttingen to Duderstadt. The section to Duderstadt was closed in 1931 due to a lack of profitability. The remaining route between Göttingen and Rittmarshausen was closed to passenger traffic on December 12, 1957 and to freight traffic on March 1, 1959.

Klein Lengden's "mini-train station" was once a stop for the Gart Valley Railway, which was closed at the end of the 1950s. The original station was preserved until about 2006. Then a replica was built as part of the construction of the bypass.
