The Grevelingen Citadel (also called a castle or arsenal) is a military building in the city of Grevelingen (Gravelines) belonging to the French Northern Department.
The citadel was built as a castle from 1528, at the hands of Emperor Charles V in his function as Count of Flanders. It was a square and moated building that was accessible via a bridge after which one had to go between two flanking towers. Incidentally, the entire city was then also provided with a wall: the ramparts of Gravelines. After all, it was a border town. A dozen buildings were found in the complex. In 1654 a devastating explosion took place at the ammunition depot.
When Grevelingen came into French hands in 1658, the city mainly became a garrison town and the castle was transformed into an arsenal by Vauban.
The remaining spaces now house the Musée du Dessin et de l'Estampe orginale. This includes engravings.
The spaces include the Poudrières (gunpowder warehouse) from 1742, the Salle du Pilier from 1680, the Corps de Garde (guard house) from 1741 and the Casemate du Four à Pain (casemate of the baking ovens) from 1528.
The arsenal also houses a theater: the Vauban scene.

The museum of drawing and graphics is housed in the Poudrière (1742), the former gunpowder warehouse. It is devoted to the history and techniques of prints and engravings, with examples from Dürer to Léger. In the basement you will see a beautiful copy of the relief map of gravelines (1756), which is linked to a fascinating and playful performance: based on a 20' sound and light show, 2 soldiers take you on a ramble through their small fortified town.
The other part of the museum is located in the underground casemate (1693), the former weapons warehouse of the fortifications. Temporary exhibitions of etchings, drawings and engravings are held in the "Salle du pillier". Work by Gromeire, Leroy and Dodin, among others, is regularly exhibited here.

The museum is surrounded by beautiful gardens with beautiful sculptures by Charles Gadenne: La Conversation and La Vigie.

The small town of Gravelines is a well-preserved fortified artificial island surrounded by walls and a water-filled moat. At its western tip is the even more protected old arsenal castle, now serving as a museum of design and original prints. Free entry to the garden.
