The citadel was built in 1666 as a defensive structure by order of Prince Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen. The site covers 22 hectares - enough space to relax, do sports or visit the magnificent rose garden with the baroque pavilion.Then it is worth going up to the viewing platform of the Friedrich Christian Bastion. From here you not only have a wonderful view over the area and can watch the hustle and bustle at the train station right next to the park - you also have a great overview of the "Castrum Vechtense", a medieval reconstruction of the old Vechta Castle, which was opened in the citadel park in 2014 has arisen.
