historical place with the replica of the castle tower, Castrum Vechtense
October 3, 2017
The knights meet here once a year – in the citadel park, Vechta's green lung and resort, just a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of the district town's shopping street. Because during the Burgmannentage, a medieval spectacle, exciting knight fights and a medieval market take place here every year on the last weekend in September. But the Citadel Park in Vechta is also definitely worth a visit on any other day of the year. After extensive archaeological excavations from 1987 to 1991, the park was created as a partial reconstruction of the old Vechta fortress with moats. The citadel was built in 1666 as a defensive structure by order of Prince Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen. The site covers 22 hectares - enough space to relax, do sports or visit the magnificent rose garden with the baroque pavilion. Then it is worth going up to the viewing platform of the Friedrich Christian Bastion. From here you not only have a wonderful view over the area and can watch the hustle and bustle at the train station right next to the park - you also have a great overview of the "Castrum Vechtense", a medieval reconstruction of the old Vechta Castle, which was opened in the citadel park in 2014 has arisen.
