In 1125 Ritter Gelphrad von Kungestein built the original church of St. Georg. A choir tower church was built around 1450, with the basement of the existing church tower serving as a choir room. In 1817 the church tower was raised with cuboids from the Breitenstein Castle and since then an onion dome has adorned the tower. Much of the furnishings of the former simultaneous church can be seen in the Sulzbach City Museum. The Maria Altar was subsequently attached to the altar wall in the Catholic Michaelskirche, whereby the lower part serves as a rolling folk altar for the Catholics in the Simultan Church in Fürn.
