On the main road in Backemoor, which leads from the B70 and Breinermoor to Collinghorst and Westrhauderfehn, we find a gallery Dutchman, built in 1798, which was partially destroyed, did not leave an attractive impression for a long time and thus led an inconspicuous existence. In 2020 the mill was completely repaired and went back into operation with a young miller in spring 2021. Since then, one can enjoy the rotating metal windmills, which are shiny silver and can be seen from afar, for example from the Leda near Amdorf.

A commercial and residential building is attached to the mill, which is now inhabited by the young miller and his family.

After visiting the mill, it is also worthwhile to visit the beautifully situated Backemoor church.

The history of the Backemoor mill

After almost 50 years of dispute with the neighboring millers from Leer, Collinghorst and Rhaude, construction of the first mill (Pelde wind mill) began in 1798. The neighboring millers feared a loss of sales and wanted to prevent the construction of the mill in Backemoor. The first mill was built by the miller Poppe Janssen from Esens.

In 1901, the existing windmill was expanded from a single-story masonry structure to a three-story masonry structure. The mill had previously been bought by Johannes Müller for 33,500 marks on September 14, 1900 at the Pocker's Inn in Backemoor, at the highest bidder. In 1929, the mill was taken over by his son Rolf Fleßner Müller and operated until 1962. The company was then converted into a general partnership and run by the owners Rolf Fleßner Müller and his son Annäus Müller until 1980.
