The Birnau pilgrimage church was built on historical grounds between 1747 and 1750 and belonged to the Salem monastery. Even before that there was a place of pilgrimage here. It has an eventful history and was even temporarily closed. In 1919 it was sold for 70,000 Reichsmarks by the state of Baden to the Cistercian abbey of Wettingen- Mehrerau near Bregenz.
