St. Johannis was built from field stones in the 13th century and supplemented with a square wooden tower in the late 17th century. It forms the center of Sterley. Inside there are paintings from several phases of the Gothic period, the oldest being the early Gothic scattering patterns, stars, lilies and rib painting on the choir vault. In its history it was under both patronage and ducal patronage. The church was the hereditary burial of the Wackerbarth on Kogel.
In the churchyard there is an oak tree, the age of which is several hundred years.
