Abenberg Castle rises prominently above Abenberg. You have this view from Obersteinbach ob Gmünd.
The castle was built between 1130 and 1140. Today the castle houses a restaurant, a hotel, a conference center as well as the house of Franconian history and the Abenberg lace museum.

In the 11th and 12th centuries, Abenberg was the ancestral home of the powerful lords of Abenberg, bailiffs of the Bishopric of Bamberg, counts of the Radenzgau and Rangau. Around 1200, the Hohenzollerns, burgraves of Nuremberg, inherited the Abenberg estate, which they sold to the diocese of Eichstätt in 1296. From then on the castle served as a nursing home, but fell into disrepair after it was abandoned. In 1662, buildings such as the large residential tower were demolished. In 1806, Abenberg came to the Kingdom of Bavaria, which sold the castle for demolition. In 1875 K. J. Kerschina acquired the castle ruins and carried out reconstruction work, which was continued by Anton Schott from 1881. In 1982/84 the city of Abenberg acquired the semi-ruin and, together with the special purpose association and the district, renovated it as a two-part museum (House of Franconian History & Lace Museum) and restaurant until 1996.

Nice town with a castle worth seeing. Can actually be easily reached from all directions via bike paths or side roads that are not very busy.
