The Steinerne Steg is an old bridge over the Passer in Merano in Burggrafenamt (South Tyrol). The two-arched bridge was built in 1616-17 in place of an older wooden bridge by the Brixen architect Andrä Tanner; she is now closed to traffic. The sometimes to be found assumption, the Italian name Ponte Romano pointed to a Roman predecessor, does not correspond to the historical facts: The name was invented in 1935 by the fascist authorities in the course of their Italianization campaign in South Tyrol. [2] In the Merano address book of 1929 is still Ponte di Pietra listed as a name.

With the construction of the stone pier 1616-17 the previous older wooden bridge was replaced. The bridge is a convenient connection over the Passer.

The Steinerne Steg is Meran's oldest existing bridge. Its location between Gilf and winter or summer resort in the fresh green of the Passerufer and the classic simplicity of its two arches make it one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.
