The eastern district of Karlsruhe Durlach is older than Karlsruhe itself. Durlach has medieval flair. This is characterized by the picturesque market square, the city wall, the palace square and the narrow streets and walls. Durlach is often referred to as the "mother" of Karlsruhe, as the residence of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach was Durlach. It was not until 1715 that Karl Wilhelm moved his court to Karlsruhe.
