Benrath Palace was built from 1755 to 1773 under the direction of Nicolas de Pigage (1723–1796) on behalf of Elector Karl Theodor of the Palatinate as a widow's seat for Elector Elisabeth Auguste. The listed ensemble of summer palace, hunting park, ponds and canal system is considered an important architectural work of art in Düsseldorf.

The exterior architecture of Benrath Palace, with the main building and cavalier wings, is in a representative Baroque style, with the wings on the reception side embracing half of the circular CASTLE HOSPITAL. As well as the elongated rectangular mirror pond on the garden side, it was designed to mirror the facades in the water. The entire water architecture is fed by the Itter.

The French garden to the east of the main building was reserved for the Elector Elisabeth Auguste as a private estate. Between 1989 and 1993, the plant was restored. The name of the garden derives from the French garden art of Baroque, which follows strict geometric principles. To the east is a cascade of several pools. The water features with six small fountains were installed in 1955/56. In the west, a lower floral parterre adjoins, which is planted in the spring and summer after a park care in the baroque pattern.

Elector Carl Theodor's private garden west of the palace was redesigned by Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe and Peter Joseph Lenné. A garden plan from 1807 is kept in the North Rhine-Westphalian State Archives in Düsseldorf. The eastern part retained Pigage's system until about 1840 with a rectangular, lower-lying water basin. This part was later converted by the cousin Weyhes Peter Joseph Lenné into a pond with a curved shape and natural-looking bank vegetation. A small bridge leads across the pond. At the end of the 19th century, exotic trees and perennials, such as ginko and sequoias, were planted near the main building in the English part. With evergreen foliage, conifers and rhododendrons ensure the beauty of the garden even in the autumn and winter months.
In 2002 the Benrath Palace Park was part of the EUROGA 2002plus and was extensively restored on this occasion. Two years later, he was included as an outstanding example in the street of garden art on the Rhine and Meuse.
