The ruins of Virneburg Castle stand on a slate hill at an altitude of around 430 metres. The Nitzbach stream flows around it. It is best to park at the small community centre in the middle of the village and then walk out of town until you come to a signpost saying "To the castle". From here the path leads in gentle serpentines to the former hilltop castle.

The Virneburg castle ruins were once a hilltop castle and are still surrounded by the Nitzbach river today. The remains of the old walls stand on a slate hilltop at around 430 m above sea level.
Access to the round tower is currently blocked due to structural testing. But even so, the old castle has a lot to offer and it is exciting to explore the nooks and crannies

An imposing castle ruin above the Eifel village of Virneburg. Romantic. Easy to walk on.
