The market was planned by Richard Riemerschmid as the future center of the garden city of Hellerau, and the first buildings, shops and post office were built on the southwest side of the square in 1910/11, but the ensemble could not be completed as a result of the First World War The market was completed by the architect Rudolf Kolbe in 1930. The listed buildings were renovated in 1996-98. Since 1930, the Hellerau coffee house has been located in the Eckhaus zum Hirtenweg. "

The memorial plaque for the founding of the garden city of Hellerau is unfortunately embedded very inconspicuously in the wall.

On the west side of the market you can see the two-storey, slightly curved row of shops planned by Riemerschmid in 1909. The other pages were not completed until 1927-30 with rental apartments, shops and the “Kaffee Hellerau” by Kolbe and Wrede. To the north of the market there is an area with small houses, gardens and rental villas by the founding architects Riemerschmid, Tessenow and Muthesius.
