Near Lüneburg, on the Timeloberg near Wendisch Evern, on May 4, 1945, the end of the Second World War in Europe and with it the liberation from the Nazi tyranny began. Here a delegation from the High Command of the Wehrmacht signed the unconditional surrender of all German troops in Holland, northwest Germany, Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark to the British army command under Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery. The ceasefire took effect on May 5 at 8:00 a.m. In the Netherlands and Denmark this day is still a commemorative day or a national holiday.
