Volubilis is the largest archaeological site in Morocco. It covers a total area of approximately 40 hectares. Around 18 hectares of this are open to the public. I'd recommend visiting in the winter months, as there is no shade at all and can be a glowing oven in summer. During winter/spring you also see alot more greenery and wildflowers decorating the site, making it especially pretty to visit, overlooking the lush green valley.

Try and get a tourguide, there are lots of details and information which is otherwise easily overlooked.

Once the capitol of the region, it is strategically positioned overlooking a fertile valley and backed by two mountains, which made it easy to defend. 60% of the city is still covered and remains hidden.
