The large medieval brick fort of the Scaligers was built in 1354 by Cangrande II and is now one of the most important art sites in Europe. A crenellated wall surrounds the fortress and its 6 towers. In the Middle Ages, an additional moat protected the outer wall. Contrary to all assumptions, the fortress was not built against enemies from outside, but rather the hated Scaliger dynasty sought protection from their own population here. The city palace on the Piazza dei Signori was abandoned and the noble family moved to Castelvecchio. Ironically, this inward-looking fortress was eventually captured from the outside when the Milanese Visconti put an end to Scaliger rule.
