A breathtaking landscape with magnificent views. The climb is very easy to walk, but I recommend sturdy shoes. If it goes to Rachel, I would definitely take this route.

The hiking car park in Oberfrauenau  is right on the edge of the forest, so you can start the hike straight away: At first, the hiking trail marked with the Grünkeil sign follows the Marienweg gently uphill in the forest in the direction of Paukenriegel and before the right-hand curve changes to the Frauenauer Rachelsteig, which climbs steadily uphill leads. Where the hiking trail crosses beetle wood areas, it is sawn free so that you can hike steadily upwards. The rock and root trail leads steeply up through the forest to the refuge on the Rachelwiese  (1:50 hours) in the saddle between the small and the large Rachel. Even before the hiking trail reaches the meadow, a path branches off sharply to the left to the vantage point on the Little Rachel: next to rocky outcrops, it meanders all the way to the north-west falls, where it descends a little and reaches one of the most fascinating sunset spots in the Bavarian Forest: more 500 meters further down in the valley of the Kleiner Regen, the drinking water reservoir Frauenau flashes, surrounded by mountains, behind it are the Großer Arber, Osser, Falkenstein, to the right the meadows of the spruce forest look like shining eyes, behind them stretch almost endless forest ridges.

On the Rachelwiese, the Grünkeilpfad leads into the Goldsteig, which leads comfortably to the Waldschmidthaus (2:10 hours), an inn located on a mountain meadow. It is almost at the edge of the Seewand: There you have an excellent view of the Rachelsee. The Waldschmidthaus, built in 1912 and stylishly renovated, is currently permanently closed.

The Goldsteig leads from the Waldschmidthaus to the gneiss ridge of the Großer Rachel (2:25 hours). The summit cross offers a fantastic view of the peaks of the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests, with the right weather the peaks of the Alps are on the horizon.
