In a ZDF survey on the most popular excursion destinations in Germany, the Great Rachel was number 1 in the mountain category at 1,453 meters! The highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest National Park can now officially adorn itself with the title “Germany's most popular excursion mountain”.

The name of Rachel is said to come from the Celtic and mean "rough". For the effort of the ascent, however, you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Bavarian Forest and the Bohemian Forest.

The rustic forests around the 1453 meter high Rachel have always been considered mysterious. Perhaps that is why the Great Rachel with its legendary lake has always been a popular destination for many nature lovers. After numerous wind throws and bark beetle infestation, a completely new forest develops: young spruces, rowan berries and occasional mountain maples grow in the middle of the standing and lying tree trunks. The Great Rachel offers a good view of the surrounding high altitudes as far as the neighboring Czech national park Šumava and, with a distant view, also up to the Alps.
