The Landwehrweg leads 30 km around Lemgo. Today's path was in the Middle Ages a protective barrier of hedges, mostly impenetrable hawthorn hedges. At the passages stood farms. The residents had the task of a fire to warn the guard on the municipal tower of the Nicolaikirche when bandits wanted to invade the rich Hanseatic city of Lemgo.
