In recent years the beavers have "nibbled" several trees north of Lake Venekoten that they were a danger. Since storms often topple the trees in the region, several trees were felled in a campaign two years ago. So far you can see the gaps between the trees.

"... Between 1981 and 1989 a resettlement project of the beaver was carried out in the northern Eifel, in which twelve animals were released. These animals established themselves in the Eifel and in the area of the Rur and finally migrated over the Maas into the Schwalm the first animal registered in the Viersen district in 1997.
The Schwalm is now completely populated by beavers. There are currently (beginning of 2020) around 18 districts occupied by the backwaters. For some years now there have also been beaver sightings at the Krickenbeck lakes. There are currently at least seven districts in the Nette catchment area and at least seven in the Niers area. A widespread expansion of the beaver population in the Viersen district can therefore be expected in the foreseeable future - a success for nature conservation! ... "

Unfortunately we only saw the signs and not the builders, but the buildings of beavers alone are rarely or not found in NRW
