Gert Bartsch is the creator of this work of art. He is a passionate steel worker and created the Fluke in memory of the whale drivers of this place. Bremen's whaling has been practiced near Greenland since 1653; the bacon was used for soap and oil for lamps. The Bremen whaling, the center of which was Vegesack, ended in 1858. A number of whalers lived in Altenesch, not a few of whom died in the icy sea.
